12. A friend of mine has dark patches on the cheeks and forehead. She has seen a number of estheticians and dermatologists and was given crèmes that caused irritation and redness to her skin. What are those patches and what products are available to treat them?
The condition is called hyperpigmentation of the skin or melasma, a condition where people get dark patches on the cheeks. This is usually caused by ultraviolet type A and B which are damaging to the skin. This can also happen in women after taking oral contraceptive pills for a duration or after having children. It can also happen with trauma, chemical peeling, or laser treatments to the skin. She may have have been using products containing Hydroquinone or Kojic Acid which tend to be too strong for the facial skin thus causing redness and irritation.
